Bryan Higgins, B.S. 2017

PhD Student, Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment – Durham NC

2017 Major: Physics; certificate in Energy & the Environment

How has being a Physics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"My Physics degree from Duke gave me a foundation of knowledge that I've been able to build on both in my career in the renewable energy industry and now in my graduate education. Having a Physics background has helped me in my career because of how applicable it can be. Understanding the fundamental physical processes that govern the universe provides a great baseline that can be applied to other scientific and technical fields. I've also relied heavily on the quantitative skills I developed in college in my work as a solar energy performance engineer and in my graduate education/research."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Physics programs?

"My advice would be to keep your options open. Your career may take you in unexpected directions, and you should always be open to considering new opportunities as they arise. The background and skills you will learn in this program will help you for years to come, and can be applied to a wide variety of industries and professions."
