Credential:Best Career Pathway For:Overview:
Physics B.S. MajorStudents planning to pursue graduate study in physics, or work in industry/engineering or laboratory research. The B.S. degree requires more courses within the major, and additional recommended advanced coursework.Requirements:
  • 10 physics courses
  • 4 math courses

Recommended:

  • 1 or more upper level physics courses
  • At least 1 more math course
  • Research independent study
  • Pursue Graduation with Distinction
Physics B.A. MajorStudents planning careers outside of physics research, which may also include graduate school work. A B.A. can also be easier to combine with another discipline that could contribute to a future career path, such as biology, chemistry, engineering, math, business, computer science, or a foreign language.Requirements:
  • 8 physics courses
  • 3 math course

Recommended:

  • Computer programming course
  • 1 additional math course
  • Research independent study
Physics MinorThe minor is intended as a pathway for students to build educational depth in physics as a broad field or in subdiscipline as a way to augment another major.

Requirements:

  • 4 required physics courses
  • 1 physics elective
Biophysics B.S. MajorThe Biophysics B.S. degree is a good choice for students who plan to do research and who may apply to a graduate program (or MD/PhD) in fields such as biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, biophysics, neurobiology, and physiology. Students interested in physics graduate school will be better off majoring in physics as the minimum requirements of the biophysics B.S. degree will not make you competitive for top physics graduate programs.

Prerequisites:

  • 2 physics courses
  • 4 math courses
  • 1 chemistry course

Requirements:

  • 3 to 5 physics courses
  • 1 to 4 chemistry courses
  • 2 biology courses
  • 3 approved electives, selected from biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, mathematics or computer science

Recommended:

  • Research independent study
  • Computer programming course
  • introductory statistics course
Biophysics B. A. MajorThe Biophysics B.A. degree is a good choice for students who may prefer not to do research and who might be considering a career in clinical medicine, business, law, or consulting.

Prerequisites:

  • 2 physics courses
  • 3 math courses
  • 1 chemistry course

Requirements:

  • 4 to 6 physics courses
  • 2 biology courses
  • 1 to 4 chemistry courses
  • 1 elective course, from biochemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, math, neuroscience, or physics
Recommended:
  • Computer programming course
  • introductory statistics course
