Graduate Student Laskaris Participated in the Global Young Scientist Summit @ one-north
Global Young Scientist Summit @ one-north (GYSS@one-north, January 19th-24th, 2014) was a gathering of young scientist, primarily graduate student and postdocs from all over the globe with internationally eminent speakers in Singapore. It was a conference covering fields ranging from biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and physics. The speakers invited at the GYSS @ one-north are globally recognized scientists recipients of Fields Medal, Millennium Technology Prize, Nobel Prize, and IEEE Medal of Honor.
The theme for GYSS @ one-north was “Advancing Science, Creating Technologies for a Better World”. Over a 5-days program, 300 young scientists including two graduate students from Duke University, Erin McKenney (biology), and Georgios Laskaris (Physics)interacted with the eminent speakers (13 Nobel laureates, 3 Fields Medal winners, 1 Millennium Prize winner and 1 IEEE Medal of Honor winner) and their peers, and discussed key areas of science and research, technology innovations and society, and solutions to global challenges. The first 3 days of the Summit were comprised by plenary sessions with invited scientific leaders in the morning followed by informal small group interaction sessions in the afternoon. In the last 2 days of the Summit, participants had the opportunity to visit the universities, research centers and local agencies of Singapore. Cultural events were organized to give an appreciation of the sights, sounds and tastes of multi-cultural Singapore.
The participation in this summit was a great opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to learn about other scientific fields, see the scientific community as a whole, open doors for future collaborations in multi-disciplinary fields, and discuss with highly recognized scientists and engineers about sustainable solutions to global problems.
