Placement in Duke Physics Courses

The introductory physics sequence consists of discussion courses (161D and 162D, or 163D) and required, 1/2-credit labs (164L and 165L).  Regardless of placement in the lecture sequence, students interested in a Physics or Biophysics major should take the lab courses Physics 164L, followed by 165L, at their earliest opportunity.

Advanced placement recommendations for lecture courses: First-year students interested in physics or biophysics are recommended to take at least one of the intro courses for potential physics or biophysics majors (Physics 161 and 162, or 163), regardless of AP credit; the AP Physics C or IB Physics HL courses do not teach with the depth, insight, and rigor of Physics 161 and 162.

A student who has scores of 5 on the mechanics AP level-C exam and on the electricity and magnetism AP level-C exam should consider taking Physics 163D  to satisfy the introductory physics sequence requirement.

A student who has Physics 25 credit (equivalent to a 4 or 5 on the mechanics AP level-C exam)  may consider taking Physics 162D and 164L to satisfy the introductory physics sequence requirement.
