Donna Kohout, B.A. 1993

Retired Major, US Air Force

1993 Major: Physics

How has being a Physics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Having no idea what I wanted to do as a career, I chose to major in Physics because I enjoyed math/science and it was the fewest required classes for a major, which allowed me to study abroad in Vienna with the Wind Symphony and take a semester off. A secondary reason for choosing physics is that any potential employer would know I was intelligent, since I had no idea what I wanted to do. This proved correct and very helpful over the years. In the end, I served in the Air Force for 10 years as an F16 and F117 pilot, retiring after 10 years as an admissions counselor for the Air Force Academy. Now I raise my daughters and make a home wherever we have lived (which includes three continents plus Micronesia, four states and six countries). Because of my degree in Physics from Duke, my education has certainly never stood in the way of any job or volunteer opportunity that crossed my path. And often has testified to a strong character and mind."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Physics programs?

"Don't hesitate to ask for help early and often, from peers, TAs and teachers as available. And make sure you stay balanced in all areas of life: physical fitness, emotional health, spiritual wellness, social interaction and solitude as well as mental/intellectual strength."
