Professor Henry Greenside has co-authored a graduate-level textbook called Pattern Formation and Dynamics in Nonequilibrium Systems.
Greenside's co-author is Professor Michael C. Cross at the California Institute of Technology.
As a member of Duke’s Center for Nonlinear and Complex Systems, Greenside has spent years teasing apart the secrets of nonequilibrium systems. Discovering the rules that govern nonequilibrium systems could lead to better prediction of weather and earthquakes, and better treatment or prevention of heart attacks and epileptic seizures. Cambridge University Press published the book in August.
Greenside and Cross met in the 1980s at AT&T Bell Labs, where Greenside was working as a post-doctorate and Cross as a staff physicist. The pair later independently developed and led similar courses about nonequilibrium systems at their universities; the book is based on their teaching and course-development experience.
