New Introductory Physics Sequence Starting in Fall 2024

Starting in Fall 2024, there’s a new sequence for Introductory Physics at Duke that will impact students in life sciences and prehealth programs who take physics as part of their degree paths. Physics 121 and 122 will be phased in to replace the current two-semester introductory sequence of Physics 141/142.

Physics 121 and 122 differ from 141/142 by featuring a “math along the way” format where Math modules are built into the courses and calculus is not a prerequisite. The new sequence will also employ student-centered, active learning pedagogies.

Students taking the new sequence will still be introduced to core topics of kinematics, dynamics, systems of particles, momentum, energy, angular momentum, conversation laws, statics, fluids and oscillations. Physics 121/122 will also include lab and discussion components.

"We are very excited that the Physics Department will be offering this new sequence at Duke, " said Academic Dean Claire Siburt. "Having a 'Math Along the Way' option for physics, with the built-in support that is planned, is a great opportunity for students intending to pursue many different majors."

Physics 121 will be available in Fall 2024 and replaces Physics 141, while Physics 122 will be available in Spring 2025 and replaces Physics 142.

For more information about this new course sequence, join an info session on April 2 at 5:30 in Social Sciences 136. Questions about the courses can be directed to Professors Ying Wu and Ashutosh Kotwal, Director of Undergraduate Studies in Physics Ayana Arce or Academic Dean Claire Siburt.
