Quantum Industry Consultant for Electronics, IBM – San Franciso, CA

1993 M.A., Physics

How has being a Physics graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I am part of IBM's Quantum Computing group. My role there is to work with clients to apply quantum computers to the electronics and semiconductor industry. I got my Master's in Physics from Duke with a Master's thesis in quantum switching devices. I got my Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (from another institution) with a thesis in semiconductor devices. I then worked in the semiconductor and electronics industry for 25 years. Then IBM approached me. They were looking for people who had background in quantum physics and also deep industry experience. So, it was a combination of my Duke Master's in Physics coupled with 25 years in the electronics industry that got me in my role today."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Physics programs?

"Study what you love and find a way to apply that to your other goals in life."
