Duke Campus
Most of our workstations are on a private network at Duke. You can access workstations directly by their hostname + internal.phy.duke.edu. For example:
ssh grads-02.internal.phy.duke.edu
This will work from anywhere on campus or off campus via the VPN.
Connecting from off campus
- The best option is to use a public login machine. We provide login1.phy.duke.edu and login2.phy.duke.edu for this purpose. Since the project space is NFS mounted, you can access your files from these systems. Also, these systems have a faster network connection than most workstations, so file transfers may be faster.
- If you need to access your specific workstation remotely from your laptop or home computer, try using the Duke VPN. For "Department" just leave the setting at "-Default-". You must use Multi-Factor Authentication to access the VPN. Once you are connected you can ssh directly to your workstation as if you were on campus.
- For Linux, you can use the package "network-manager-openconnect-gnome" to connect to the Duke VPN. Use the Gateway of vpn.duke.edu for Duke Health us dmvpn.duhs.duke.edu. Here is the connection dialog under Ubuntu Linux 18.04:
- In the Settings app, Select Network, then click the "+" beside "VPN" and select "Cisco AnyConnect Compatible (openconnect)" option.
The Gateway value should be portal.duke.edu
For normal use, the VPN is an option in the upper right menu.
Enter your Duke netid infomation.
Enter your Multi-Factor information
- If you are familiar with network ports and concepts, you can use ssh to tunnel traffic. More details at http://www.spencerstirling.com/computergeek/sshtunnel.html
